The Beaver (Builder)

The beaver is a builder of dams. It has remarkable construction and architectural skills. It is also an animal with a limited scope that concentrates on details. This can be a very powerful state for influence. It is my own weakest personality state. I’ve made enormous efforts to strengthen it.

For several years I worked as a vocational economics expert for the courts in California, New Mexico, and Texas with a firm called, logically enough, Vocational Economics, Inc. My expertise was in calculating lost earning capacities for injured people. There is no small amount of science in applying various statistical government tables, such as survival data and average salaries, to individual cases. If John Q. Case Study suffered a head injury while driving a forklift that was not maintained correctly, the employee might sue the company for negligence. It would be my job to determine the extent of the disability for his head injury, what he might have earned without the head injury, what he was capable of earning with the head injury, and how these figures would predict over his entire work life. It was a numbers game, and my college degree in mathematics and graduate major in statistics served me well with the concepts involved in reaching reasonable predictions. But often the attorneys cross-examining me went after the devil in my details. They raked through my calculations looking for flaws that might destroy my credibility with the jury.

I survived more than twenty-five trials but I was burned by lapses in details on a couple of depositions. For those lapses, I suffered crushing mental anguish. But for the great majority of cases, my practiced focus on details exasperated attorneys trying to discredit me.
